Getting Ready

Well, I started getting my machine ready. Cleaned out the Garage, changed the plug, and charged the battery. Then I nearly killed the battery trying to get it to start but no luck. Opened up the airbox and pulled out a REALLY NASTY air filter, then cleaned out the giant possum nest. Got it to run briefly by spraying starter fluid directly into the carb, but as soon as it runs out of starter fluid it dies again. Conclusion: probably time to clean out the carb. I suppose it could be just bad gas, but my gut tells me it's the carb.

did you drain the tank? drain out the carb bowl?

dude, the thing hasn't run for 8 months. There's nothing in the carb bowl to drain.

Have not drained the tank yet.

no need to get snippy.

could be water.

that's a good point. Well, I need to drain it anyway, and I'm going to drain the gas regardless. Once I do that, I'll try to start it up before pulling the carb.

I am assuming the gas was "off" during the 8 months.

The needle valve in the carb may be stuck from sitting.

you would assume incorrectly. However, remember that it had already stopped working before it sat for those 8 months. At that time the gas was relatively fresh. Also, for some time before it stopped working, (including my last trip, I think) it had not been idling correctly.

did you take the carb off yet?

If the gas was on, the carb is going to be filled with nasty varnish and jelly. The jets are going to be totally clogged.

It wasn't on for the whole 8 months. But it was on for however long it was before it stopped working. And then when I moved it into the garage, I turned it on to try again - and then left it on.

haven't done it yet - Too much to do. hopefully today.

It only takes a couple weeks to develop nasty jelly... I know from recent experience with my Yamaha 80.

I'm waiting for someone else to come over and do it for me. :)

Pulled the Carb off. Have not yet started to disassemble it. However, there WAS still some gas in it, but when I drained it - it was REALLY green looking. Almost like anti-freeze. The gas I drained out of the tank was really nasty looking too.

I seem to recall Grubby finding green gas in his carb. Are you sure one of your kids didn't pour Mtn Dew in your gas tanks.
